Description

The Victron Cyrix-ct 12/24-120 is an intelligent battery combiner, a microprocessor controlled heavy duty relay that automatically parallels two batteries for charging and isolates them again when charging stops. It is an ideal, low loss replacement for a traditional diode split charge isolator, so alternator and charger output voltages do not need to be raised.

Rated at 120 A continuous with a 180 A five second cranking rating, it suits smaller marine and vehicle installations where a starter battery and a domestic or accessory bank need to share charge. Bidirectional voltage sensing means it engages whether the charge source is on the starter side or the accessory side, and its dual power supply lets it close even when one battery is too flat to power the relay.

Intelligent trend detection studies whether the system voltage is rising or falling before it acts, preventing the rapid on/off cycling that troubles simple voltage sensitive relays. The unit auto ranges between 12 V and 24 V, includes a Start Assist input for emergency parallel starting, and disengages on over temperature to protect the contacts.

How does the Cyrix-ct decide when to combine the batteries?
It monitors the voltage of both batteries. When it senses a charge voltage (from about 13 V, or 26 V on a 24 V system) with a rising trend it engages to parallel the batteries, and it disconnects again when the voltage falls back below the float level, indicating charging has stopped.
What is intelligent trend detection?
Rather than switching on a fixed voltage with a fixed delay, the Cyrix looks at whether the overall voltage is rising or falling and only reverses a previous action if the trend has genuinely reversed for a period of time. This prevents the rapid on/off cycling that can affect simpler voltage sensitive relays.
Does it work on both 12 V and 24 V systems?
Yes. The Cyrix-ct 12/24 automatically detects whether it is fitted to a 12 V or a 24 V system, so no manual configuration is needed.
What is the Start Assist function for?
Start Assist lets you parallel the batteries manually using a push button or switch, keeping the relay engaged for 30 seconds. It is useful in an emergency when the starter battery is flat and you want to draw on the domestic battery to start the engine.
Is it a suitable replacement for a diode splitter?
Yes. Because the relay contacts introduce virtually no voltage loss, the Cyrix is an excellent replacement for a diode isolator and the alternator or charger output voltage does not need to be raised to compensate.
