Description

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 is a non-isolated DC-DC charger that draws from a 12V source and charges a 12V service battery at up to 30A (360W continuous at 40 degrees C). With a wide input range of 8 to 17V and a buck-boost design, it keeps the output stable even when the supply voltage sags, which is common on boats and vehicles with long cable runs or where a Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternator delivers a reduced charging voltage.

An adaptive three-stage charge algorithm (bulk, absorption, float) recharges lead-acid and lithium batteries correctly, shortening the absorption period after shallow discharges to avoid overcharging and extending it after a deep discharge. An engine-running detection mechanism protects the starter battery from being drawn down, and the unit can alternatively be configured as a fixed-voltage power supply. Built-in Bluetooth allows monitoring, configuration and firmware updates through the VictronConnect app.

The charger is short-circuit proof, can be paralleled without limit to raise the available current, and offers IP43 protection for the electronics when fitted with the screw terminals facing downwards. A remote on/off input is provided and no special tools are needed for installation.

Is the Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 isolated?
No. It is a non-isolated charger, so the input and output share a common negative. Where galvanic isolation between the source and service battery is required, choose an isolated Orion-Tr Smart model instead.
Can it charge lithium batteries?
Yes. The adaptive three-stage algorithm supports both lead-acid and lithium batteries. For lithium the absorption time is fixed (default two hours), and all charge parameters can be set in the VictronConnect app.
Will it work with a Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternator?
Yes. The wide 8 to 17V input and buck-boost design keep the output stable even when a smart alternator supplies a low voltage, and the engine-running detection mechanism prevents the starter battery from being discharged.
Can I increase the output current by adding more units?
Yes. The unit is short-circuit proof and an unlimited number can be connected in parallel to increase the total available charge current.
Does it have a VE.Direct port?
No. The Orion-Tr Smart range is not equipped with a VE.Direct port. Monitoring and configuration are handled over built-in Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app.
