Description

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-17 is a non-isolated DC-DC charger that works between 24V systems, charging a 24V service battery at up to 17A (400W continuous at 40 degrees C). A wide 16 to 35V input together with a buck-boost design holds the output steady even when the source voltage drops, a common occurrence on boats and vehicles with long cable runs or where a Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternator delivers a low charging voltage.

An adaptive three-stage charge algorithm (bulk, absorption, float) suits both lead-acid and lithium batteries, shortening the absorption phase after a shallow discharge and lengthening it after a deep discharge so the battery is fully recharged without overcharging. Engine-running detection protects the input battery against discharge, and the converter can instead be set as a fixed-voltage power supply. Built-in Bluetooth provides monitoring, configuration and firmware updates via the VictronConnect app.

The unit is short-circuit proof, can be paralleled in unlimited numbers to increase output current, and offers IP43 protection for the electronics when installed with the screw terminals facing downwards. A remote on/off input is provided and installation needs no special tools.

Is the Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-17 isolated?
No. It is a non-isolated charger, so input and output share a common negative. Where galvanic isolation between the source and service battery is required, choose an isolated Orion-Tr Smart model.
Why use a 24V to 24V charger?
It allows a 24V service battery to be charged correctly from a 24V source whose voltage varies, for example a smart alternator or a long cable run, applying a controlled three-stage charge rather than passing the input through unregulated.
Can it charge lithium batteries?
Yes. The adaptive three-stage algorithm supports both lead-acid and lithium batteries. For lithium the absorption time is fixed (default two hours) and all parameters are set in the VictronConnect app.
Can I add units to increase output current?
Yes. The charger is short-circuit proof and an unlimited number can be connected in parallel to increase the total available charge current.
Does it have a VE.Direct port?
No. The Orion-Tr Smart range has no VE.Direct port. Monitoring and configuration use built-in Bluetooth and the VictronConnect app.
