The Victron Orion-Tr 48/12-20 is a 240W isolated DC-DC converter that steps a 32-70 V input down or up to an adjustable output around 12.2 V. It is short circuit proof, has a remote on/off terminal and offers 200V DC galvanic isolation. Designed as a voltage converter, it is not intended for battery charging.

Description

The Victron Orion-Tr 48/12-20 is an isolated DC-DC converter rated at 240W continuous, converting a 32-70 V input into a nominal 12.2 V output. The output voltage is adjustable across 10-15 V, and galvanic isolation of 200V DC is provided between the input, output and case, which makes it suitable for systems where the input and output grounds must be kept separate.

All models are short circuit proof and protected against over temperature, with the output current reducing progressively at high ambient temperatures. A remote on/off terminal removes the need for a high current switch in the input wiring and can be operated by a low power switch or, for example, an engine run/stop signal. The unit is rated to IP43 when installed with the screw terminals facing downwards, and an unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel to increase the available output current.

The output voltage is adjustable and the Orion-Tr converter is not intended for battery charging. Where a regulated charge profile is required, use an Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger instead.

Can the Orion-Tr 48/12-20 be used to charge a battery?
No. This is a voltage converter with an adjustable but fixed output level, not a battery charger, so it has no multi-stage charge algorithm. For battery charging use an Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger, which provides a regulated 3-stage charge profile.
Is the input electrically isolated from the output?
Yes. The 48/12-20 provides 200V DC galvanic isolation between the input, the output and the case, so the input and output grounds can be kept separate.
Can I adjust the output voltage?
Yes. The nominal output is 12.2 V and it can be adjusted across 10-15 V. When set at or below nominal the output stays stable across the full input range thanks to the buck-boost function.
What does the remote on/off terminal do?
It lets you switch the converter on and off with a low power switch or signal, for example an engine run/stop signal, removing the need for a high current switch in the input wiring. Current draw falls below 200 uA when disabled via the remote port.
Can I connect several units in parallel for more current?
Yes. All models are short circuit proof and an unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel to increase the total output current.
