Description
The SmartSolar MPPT 150/85-MC4 VE.Can is a high-power solar charge controller that accepts a PV array of up to 150 V, allowing longer string runs without exceeding the input limit. Its ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking continuously finds the optimum operating point of the array, harvesting up to 30 per cent more energy than a PWM controller and up to 10 per cent more than a slower MPPT, with peak conversion efficiency above 98 per cent and no cooling fan.
Built-in Bluetooth lets you set up, monitor and update the controller directly from the free VictronConnect app. Both VE.Can and VE.Direct ports are provided for connection to a GX device and the VRM online portal, giving full remote monitoring and configuration. Using VE.Can you can daisy-chain up to 25 units (or up to 10 via Bluetooth) for synchronised charging of a single battery bank.
This is the same controller as the screw-terminal version but fitted with three pairs of MC4 PV connectors for fast, tool-free solar connection. A programmable relay and a remote on/off input allow the controller to be integrated into wider system control and alarm schemes, and the eight pre-programmed or user-defined charge algorithms suit a wide range of battery chemistries.

How is an MPPT controller better than a PWM controller?
The SmartSolar uses ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking to continuously find the optimum operating point of the solar array. This harvests up to 30 per cent more energy than a PWM controller and up to 10 per cent more than a slower MPPT, with peak conversion efficiency above 98 per cent and no cooling fan.
Can I set up and monitor the controller from my phone?
Yes. The controller has built-in Bluetooth Smart, so you can configure, monitor and update it directly from the free VictronConnect app without any extra hardware.
What is the difference between VE.Can and VE.Direct, and how do I connect to a GX device?
This model has both VE.Can and VE.Direct ports. Either can connect the controller to a GX device and the VRM online portal for remote monitoring and configuration. Using VE.Can you can also daisy-chain up to 25 units (or up to 10 via Bluetooth) for synchronised charging of one battery bank.
How do I size my solar array for this controller?
Keep the array within 150 V absolute maximum, with 145 V the start-up and operating maximum, and a maximum PV short circuit current of 70 A (max 30 A per MC4 connector). Nominal PV power is up to 1200 W at 12 V, 2400 W at 24 V and 4900 W at 48 V.
How are the solar panels connected on the MC4 version?
The controller has three pairs of MC4 connectors. Each MC4 connector is rated for a maximum of 30 A, so where array current is higher you may need MC4 splitter pairs to share the current across the available connectors.
