Description

The Victron Isolation Transformer 3600W Auto is a professional marine transformer that fully breaks the electrical connection between shore power and your vessel, with the added convenience of automatic input voltage detection. Shore power feeds the primary winding while the boat runs from the isolated secondary, so there is no direct continuity between the two. This eliminates stray current and galvanic corrosion, protecting your shaft, propeller, sacrificial anodes and other underwater metals, and it removes the need for a separate galvanic isolator or polarity alarm.

The Auto model senses the incoming supply and switches itself between 115V and 230V input modes: it selects 115V for a supply between 88 and 130V and 230V for a supply between 185 and 250V. This makes it ideal for vessels that cruise between regions with different mains voltages, since no manual reconfiguration is needed when you change dock. A 1:1.05 winding ratio raises the output by 5% to compensate for the voltage drop common on long marina supply cables.

Toroidal winding technology keeps the unit quiet and efficient, and a built-in soft start limits inrush current so the shore breaker does not trip when you plug in. LED indicators show the operating mode, the rugged aluminium enclosure is rated IP21, and like all core Victron products the transformer carries a five year warranty.

How does automatic input voltage detection work?
The transformer senses the incoming shore supply and switches its input mode automatically: a supply between 88 and 130V selects 115V mode, and a supply between 185 and 250V selects 230V mode. Between those ranges (0 to 87V and 130 to 185V) the input and output are switched off for safety. LED indicators show which mode is active.
How does an isolation transformer prevent galvanic corrosion?
It completely breaks the electrical connection between the shore ground and the boat. Shore power feeds the primary winding and the vessel is connected to the isolated secondary, so no galvanic current can flow through the water between your boat's underwater metals and other boats or the shore. This protects the shaft, propeller and sacrificial anodes.
Do I still need a galvanic isolator or polarity alarm with this unit?
No. Because the isolation transformer fully separates the boat from the shore earth, it removes the need for a separate galvanic isolator and polarity alarm. It also lets a GFCI on the output work correctly for onboard electrical safety.
Why choose the Auto model over the standard 3600W?
The Auto model detects and switches between 115V and 230V input automatically, so you do not need to reconfigure internal jumpers when you move between docks or countries with different mains voltages. It is the convenient choice for vessels that cruise across voltage regions.
Can it convert 50Hz to 60Hz?
No. The transformer works on either 50Hz or 60Hz systems but it cannot convert frequency between the two. It can, however, be used to convert voltage (for example 230V to 120V or 115V to 240V) depending on configuration.
Will plugging in trip the marina circuit breaker?
No. A soft start (inrush current limiter) is standard on all Victron isolation transformers. It limits the initial magnetising current so the upstream shore breaker does not trip when you switch the unit on.
