Description

The SmartSolar MPPT 100/20-48V is an ultra-fast maximum power point tracking solar charge controller from Victron Energy that automatically works with 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery banks at up to 20 A of charge current from a 100 V solar array. The ultra-fast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 per cent compared with a PWM controller and by up to 10 per cent compared with a slower MPPT, with peak conversion efficiency above 98 per cent and no cooling fan. Built-in Bluetooth allows wireless setup, monitoring and firmware updates through the free VictronConnect app, while the VE.Direct port gives a wired connection to a GX device or PC for monitoring through the VRM portal. A configurable load output with the BatteryLife algorithm disconnects connected loads before the battery is over-discharged; at 48 V the load output is limited to 1 A and is intended to drive a relay. A multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm, internal temperature compensation and a fully discharged battery recovery function protect battery health, and optional external voltage and temperature sensing via a Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 improves charging accuracy across the supported voltages.

What is the difference between MPPT and PWM charging?
An MPPT controller continuously tracks the maximum power point of the solar array, converting excess panel voltage into extra charge current. Victron states this ultra-fast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 per cent compared with a PWM controller, and by up to 10 per cent compared with a slower MPPT, especially under changing light.
Does it support 48 V battery systems?
Yes. The 100/20-48V automatically selects 12 V, 24 V or 48 V. At 48 V Victron lists a nominal PV power of 1160 W, and note that the load output is limited to 1 A at 48 V (20 A at 12 V and 24 V).
Does the 100/20 have Bluetooth?
Yes. Bluetooth Smart is built in, so you can set up, monitor, update and synchronise the controller wirelessly using the free VictronConnect app. Bluetooth can also be disabled if required.
How do I connect it to a GX device or PC?
The controller has a VE.Direct port for a wired data connection to a Color Control GX, other GX products, a PC or other devices, enabling monitoring through the Victron VRM portal.
How large a solar array can I connect?
The maximum PV open circuit voltage is 100 V and the maximum PV short circuit current is 20 A. Nominal PV power is 290 W at 12 V, 580 W at 24 V and 1160 W at 48 V. If more PV power is connected the controller limits its input.
