Description

The SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 is an ultra-fast maximum power point tracking solar charge controller from Victron Energy, rated for a 100 V solar array and 50 A of charge current into a 12 V or 24 V battery bank. By continuously tracking the optimum operating point of the panels it harvests up to 30 per cent more energy than a PWM controller and up to 10 per cent more than a slower MPPT, with peak conversion efficiency above 98 per cent and no cooling fan. Built-in Bluetooth provides wireless setup, monitoring and firmware updates through the free VictronConnect app, while the VE.Direct port gives a wired connection to a GX device or PC for system monitoring through the VRM portal. Extensive electronic protection covers PV reverse polarity, PV short circuit and over-temperature, with power derating at high temperatures. A multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm, internal temperature compensation and a fully discharged battery recovery function keep batteries healthy. Optional external voltage and temperature sensing through a Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 further improves charging accuracy.

What is the difference between MPPT and PWM charging?
An MPPT controller continuously tracks the maximum power point of the solar array, converting excess panel voltage into extra charge current. Victron states this ultra-fast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 per cent compared with a PWM controller, and by up to 10 per cent compared with a slower MPPT, especially under changing light.
Does the 100/50 have Bluetooth?
Yes. Bluetooth Smart is built in, so you can set up, monitor, update and synchronise the controller wirelessly using the free VictronConnect app on a phone or tablet.
How do I connect it to a GX device or PC?
The controller has a VE.Direct port for a wired data connection to a Color Control GX, other GX products, a PC or other devices, enabling monitoring through the Victron VRM portal.
How large a solar array can I connect?
The maximum PV open circuit voltage is 100 V and the maximum PV short circuit current is 60 A. Victron lists a nominal PV power of 700 W at 12 V and 1400 W at 24 V. If more PV power is connected the controller limits its input power.
Can I run several controllers together?
Yes. SmartSolar controllers can be synchronised via Bluetooth so multiple units charge a shared battery bank in a coordinated way, and each unit can be monitored individually in VictronConnect.
