Description

The SmartSolar MPPT 150/45 is an ultra-fast maximum power point tracking solar charge controller from Victron Energy, accepting a solar array of up to 150 V and delivering 45 A of charge current into 12 V, 24 V or 48 V battery banks with automatic voltage selection. The ultra-fast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 per cent compared with a PWM controller and by up to 10 per cent compared with a slower MPPT, with peak conversion efficiency above 98 per cent and no cooling fan. The higher 150 V PV input allows longer panel strings, which can reduce cable losses and simplify wiring on larger arrays. Built-in Bluetooth provides wireless setup, monitoring and firmware updates through the free VictronConnect app, while the VE.Direct port gives a wired connection to a GX device or PC for system monitoring through the VRM portal. Extensive electronic protection covers PV reverse polarity, PV short circuit and over-temperature with power derating. A multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm with eight pre-programmed profiles, internal temperature compensation and a fully discharged battery recovery function keep batteries healthy, and optional external sensing via a Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 improves charging accuracy.

What is the difference between MPPT and PWM charging?
An MPPT controller continuously tracks the maximum power point of the solar array, converting excess panel voltage into extra charge current. Victron states this ultra-fast MPPT improves energy harvest by up to 30 per cent compared with a PWM controller, and by up to 10 per cent compared with a slower MPPT, especially under changing light.
Does the 150/45 have Bluetooth?
Yes. Bluetooth Smart is built in, so you can set up, monitor, update and synchronise the controller wirelessly using the free VictronConnect app on a phone or tablet.
How do I connect it to a GX device or PC?
The controller has a VE.Direct port for a wired data connection to a Color Control GX, other GX products, a PC or other devices, enabling monitoring through the Victron VRM portal.
How do I size the solar array?
The maximum PV open circuit voltage is 150 V absolute (145 V at start-up and operating), and the maximum PV short circuit current is 50 A. Nominal PV power is 650 W at 12 V, 1300 W at 24 V and 2600 W at 48 V. Keep the array open circuit voltage below the limit in the coldest expected conditions.
Does it work with 48 V battery banks?
Yes. The 150/45 automatically selects 12 V, 24 V or 48 V (36 V can be set with the software tool), and the charge voltages adapt accordingly for each system voltage.
