Description

The Victron 12V 110Ah GEL Deep Cycle battery is a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery with the electrolyte held as a gel, making it maintenance free for life and spill-proof. The sealed construction allows installation in confined or poorly ventilated lockers where a flooded battery could not be used.

Gel batteries are designed for repeated deep discharge and offer a longer service life than AGM under both float and cycling conditions. With a 20-hour rated capacity of 110Ah, this size is a common choice for the main domestic bank on cruising yachts and motorboats, supporting refrigeration, lighting, pumps and navigation electronics.

Self-discharge is below 2% per month at 20C, so the battery withstands seasonal storage well. Charge it with a temperature-compensated Victron charger using the recommended gel voltage settings to obtain the rated cycle life.

What is the difference between gel and AGM batteries?
In a gel battery the electrolyte is immobilised as a gel, whereas in an AGM battery it is absorbed into a glass-fibre mat. Victron states that gel batteries generally have a longer service life and better cycle capacity, while AGM batteries are better suited to short-time delivery of high currents such as engine starting.
How many charge/discharge cycles will this battery last?
Victron rates the gel deep cycle range at 500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, 750 cycles at 50%, and 1800 cycles at 30%. Shallower discharges therefore give a much longer service life.
What charge voltages should I use?
For Victron gel deep cycle batteries the recommended settings are 14.1-14.4V absorption, 13.5-13.8V float and 13.2-13.5V storage. Temperature compensation of -24mV/C for a 12V battery is recommended when the battery is regularly below 10C or above 30C.
Is this battery maintenance free?
Yes. It is a sealed VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) battery and is maintenance free for life. Gas escapes through the safety valves only in the event of overcharging or cell failure.
Can it be stored over winter without charging?
Because of its low self-discharge of less than 2% per month at 20C, the battery can be stored for up to a year without recharging if kept cool. Storing it fully charged and in cool conditions is best for service life.
