Description

The Victron 12V 90Ah GEL Deep Cycle battery is a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery with the electrolyte immobilised as a gel. It is maintenance free for life and spill-proof, so it can be mounted in confined or awkward spaces where a flooded battery would be unsuitable.

Gel chemistry is optimised for repeated deep cycling rather than high cranking currents, and Victron rates it for a longer service life than AGM under both float and cycling duty. A 20-hour capacity of 90Ah makes this a practical mid-size house battery for galley equipment, refrigeration, lighting and electronics on cruising craft.

With self-discharge below 2% per month at 20C, the battery copes well with seasonal lay-up. To realise the full cycle life, pair it with a temperature-compensated Victron charger set to the recommended gel voltages.

What is the difference between gel and AGM batteries?
In a gel battery the electrolyte is immobilised as a gel, whereas in an AGM battery it is absorbed into a glass-fibre mat. Victron states that gel batteries generally have a longer service life and better cycle capacity, while AGM batteries are better suited to short-time delivery of high currents such as engine starting.
How many charge/discharge cycles will this battery last?
Victron rates the gel deep cycle range at 500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, 750 cycles at 50%, and 1800 cycles at 30%. Shallower discharges therefore give a much longer service life.
What charge voltages should I use?
For Victron gel deep cycle batteries the recommended settings are 14.1-14.4V absorption, 13.5-13.8V float and 13.2-13.5V storage. Temperature compensation of -24mV/C for a 12V battery is recommended when the battery is regularly below 10C or above 30C.
Is this battery maintenance free?
Yes. It is a sealed VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) battery and is maintenance free for life. Gas escapes through the safety valves only in the event of overcharging or cell failure.
Can it be stored over winter without charging?
Because of its low self-discharge of less than 2% per month at 20C, the battery can be stored for up to a year without recharging if kept cool. Storing it fully charged and in cool conditions is best for service life.
