Description

The Victron 12V 160Ah Lead Carbon battery is a sealed lead-acid battery whose negative plate active material is replaced by a lead carbon composite. This reduces sulphation and improves charge acceptance, giving better partial state-of-charge performance, more cycles and higher efficiency than a conventional VRLA battery.

The chemistry suits marine and off-grid installations that are not always returned to a full charge, such as boats relying on solar or wind at anchor. A lower charge voltage improves efficiency and reduces corrosion of the positive plate. This larger block is rated at 160Ah at the 20-hour rate (150Ah at C10, 138Ah at C5), making it suitable for substantial house banks.

Victron testing confirms at least 500 cycles at 100% depth of discharge, around 1000 cycles at 60% and 1400 at 40%, so shallower cycling considerably extends life. Charge with a Victron charger set to the recommended lead carbon voltages.

What are the advantages of lead carbon over a standard lead-acid battery?
Replacing the negative plate active material with a lead carbon composite reduces sulphation during partial state-of-charge operation, allows a lower charge voltage (giving higher efficiency and less positive-plate corrosion), and improves overall cycle life.
How many cycles does the lead carbon battery deliver?
Victron testing shows at least 500 cycles at 100% depth of discharge, at least 1000 cycles at 60% DoD, and at least 1400 cycles at 40% DoD. Shallower discharges give a longer service life.
What is the capacity at different discharge rates?
For the BAT612116081 the rated capacity is 138Ah at C5, 150Ah at C10 and 160Ah at C20, each measured to an end voltage of 10.8V.
Is lead carbon suitable for solar or wind systems?
Yes. Because it tolerates partial state-of-charge operation with less sulphation, lead carbon is well suited to systems that are not always returned to a full charge, such as solar and wind installations and boats at anchor.
What charge voltages should I use?
Victron recommends 14.1-14.4V absorption, 13.5-13.8V float and 13.2-13.5V storage for the lead carbon battery.
