Description

The Simrad HS70 is a commercial-grade GPS satellite compass that determines your vessel heading from two separate GPS antennas housed in one compact unit, giving a non-magnetic heading accurate to within 0.75 degrees. A high-speed receiver fixes position up to 20 times per second, while integrated gyro and tilt sensors add heave, roll and pitch and provide a temporary heading source if the GPS signal is briefly lost.

Because the heading is derived from satellites rather than the earth's magnetic field, the HS70 is immune to the deviation and interference that affect traditional fluxgate compasses, making it an ideal heading reference for radar overlay, chart stabilisation and autopilot steering. Data is shared over NMEA 2000, with NMEA 0183 available for heading, rate of turn and heave.

How does the HS70 measure heading?
The HS70 uses two separate GPS antennas in a single housing and compares their positions to derive a non-magnetic heading accurate to within 0.75 degrees.
Is the HS70 affected by magnetic interference?
No. Because the heading is calculated from satellite signals rather than the earth's magnetic field, the HS70 is immune to the deviation and interference that affect fluxgate compasses.
What happens during a GPS signal loss?
Integrated gyro and tilt sensors provide a temporary heading source if the GPS signal is briefly lost, so radar overlay and autopilot steering remain stable.
What outputs does the HS70 provide?
Over NMEA 2000 the HS70 outputs heading, rate of turn, heave, roll, pitch and position. An NMEA 0183 connection provides heading, rate of turn and heave only.
