Raymarine SPX-CAN SmartPilot Course Computer
Description
The Raymarine SPX-CAN is the intelligent course computer used in SPX SmartPilot autopilot systems on boats fitted with steer-by-wire steering. Unlike the SPX-10, SPX-30 and SPX-SOL course computers, the SPX-CAN does not drive a mechanical or hydraulic reversing drive. Instead it interfaces over the CAN bus to a compatible drive-by-wire steering system, such as Volvo Penta IPS, and steers the boat by controlling that system directly.
At the centre of the autopilot, the SPX-CAN processes heading, rudder and course information and applies Raymarine's proven SmartPilot steering algorithms, including AutoLearn and AutoTrim, for accurate, well-damped course keeping. An internal GyroPlus rate sensor is fitted as standard to enhance performance in demanding sea conditions. On an SPX-CAN system the drive type is configured automatically, so commissioning is focused on the vessel type and seatrial.
The course computer is the central connection point for the system. It provides SeaTalk and SeaTalkng networking for the autopilot control head and other Raymarine instruments, plus NMEA 0183 for navigation data from a compatible chartplotter or GPS. The SPX-CAN must be commissioned before use following the Raymarine setup procedure for the relevant steering system.
