SD10 Drive Unit

21120001
The SD10 is a mechanical cable drive unit with built-in rudder feedback for sailboats from 25 ft to 37 ft. It delivers over 180 kg of cable thrust and 450 Nm of rudder torque, with a solenoid clutch that allows hand steering when disengaged. It partners with the NAC-2 autopilot computer and requires access to a quadrant or tiller.

Description

The Simrad SD10 is a mechanical sailboat drive that makes it easy and economical to add an autopilot to small and medium sailboats with access to a quadrant or tiller. The system comprises the drive unit, a 2-metre steering cable and a universal connection kit, delivering over 180 kg (400 lbs) of cable thrust and a maximum rudder torque of 450 Nm with a typical hard-over to hard-over time of 12 to 18 seconds.

The drive unit houses a drive motor and a solenoid clutch that releases to allow hand steering when the autopilot is in standby, along with a built-in adjustable thrust limiter and an integral rudder feedback device. In an emergency the helmsman can override the drive simply by turning the wheel against it, while a quick-release pin at the quadrant lets the cable be disconnected entirely.

The SD10 is rated for sailboats up to 6500 kg (14300 lbs) displacement fully laden and 11 m (37 ft) in length, and partners with the Simrad NAC-2 autopilot computer to complete the steering system.
