Description

The Garmin 9-axis heading sensor provides accurate, responsive heading information to a Garmin NMEA 2000 system. Using 9-axis MEMS technology, it delivers heading to within plus or minus 3 degrees at a 10 Hz output rate, along with rate of turn and attitude data. Feeding this to a compatible chartplotter stabilises the chart, radar overlay and MARPA targets so they remain correctly oriented while manoeuvring.

The MEMS design allows the sensor to be installed in any orientation, provided it is sited away from magnetic interference, and its compass-safe distance is negligible. It connects to an existing NMEA 2000 network and is set up with menu-based or basic calibration on a compatible Garmin chartplotter. The fully gasketed, high-impact plastic housing is rated to IPX7 and accepts a NMEA 2000 input of 9 to 16 Vdc.

How accurate is the 9-axis heading sensor?
It delivers heading accuracy to within plus or minus 3 degrees, with a fast 10 Hz output rate for responsive chart and radar stabilisation.
Can it be mounted in any orientation?
Yes. Its 9-axis MEMS technology allows it to be installed in any orientation, as long as the location is away from magnetic interference. For best performance Garmin recommends mounting it horizontally on a rigid surface with the cable toward the bow.
What data does it output?
Over NMEA 2000 it outputs vessel heading, rate of turn and attitude data, which a compatible chartplotter uses to stabilise the chart, radar overlay and MARPA.
How is it calibrated?
When connected to the same NMEA 2000 network as a compatible Garmin chartplotter you are prompted to run menu-based calibration. Without a compatible chartplotter you perform a basic calibration instead.
What is its power requirement and network load?
It accepts a NMEA 2000 input of 9 to 16 Vdc and presents a load equivalent number of LEN 4 (around 200 mA).
Is it waterproof?
Yes. The fully gasketed, high-impact plastic housing is rated to IEC 60529 IPX7, withstanding incidental immersion in up to 1 m of water for 30 minutes.
