Description

The Garmin Compact Reactor 40 Hydraulic autopilot brings precise, GPS-stabilised steering to boats with hydraulic helms. At its heart is the Reactor 40 CCU, a solid-state course computer that senses heading, attitude and rate of turn to hold a course or follow a route with minimal wandering. This package includes a compact 1 L electro-hydraulic pump that drives the steering cylinder, plus an electronic control unit and an audible alarm. A Shadow Drive sensor in the hydraulic line lets you take the wheel at any time and the autopilot steps aside automatically, re-engaging when you settle back on course. The supplied GHC 20 colour instrument gives dedicated push-button and knob control at the helm, while NMEA 2000 connectivity ties the system into compatible Garmin chartplotters for waypoint and route navigation. Dockside and Sea Trial wizards tune performance to your hull.

What type of steering does this autopilot suit?
It is designed for boats with hydraulic steering. The included compact pump connects into the hydraulic steering lines to move the steering cylinder.
Does this package include a control head?
Yes. The GHC 20 autopilot instrument is supplied for dedicated control at the helm. The CCU also connects to a NMEA 2000 network so a compatible Garmin chartplotter can control the autopilot.
What does the Shadow Drive sensor do?
The Shadow Drive sensor detects when you turn the helm manually and automatically suspends autopilot control, then resumes once you hold a steady heading again.
What power supply does the system need?
The ECU and pump connect to a 12 to 24 Vdc supply through the supplied 40 A fuse, and the NMEA 2000 network is powered from a 9 to 16 Vdc source.
Where should the CCU be mounted?
Mount the CCU on a rigid surface near the centre of the boat, away from magnetic interference. Garmin recommends testing the location with a handheld compass before fixing it.
