Description

The Garmin SteadyCast heading sensor supplies reliable heading information to your Garmin marine electronics over the NMEA 2000 network. By providing a steady heading reference, it stabilises the chart, radar overlay and MARPA targets on a compatible chartplotter, helping everything stay correctly oriented as you manoeuvre.

Installation is straightforward. The sensor connects plug-and-play to an existing NMEA 2000 network and is set up with a simple two-step precision calibration on a compatible Garmin chartplotter. Its solid-state design means it can be mounted in any orientation, and the cable can be routed through the side of the housing or down through the mounting surface to suit the installation. The compact, fully gasketed housing is rated to IPX7 and presents a low network load of just LEN 2.

What does the SteadyCast heading sensor do?
It provides reliable heading data to a Garmin NMEA 2000 system, which stabilises the chart, radar overlay and MARPA targets on a compatible chartplotter so they stay correctly oriented as the boat turns.
How is it installed and set up?
It connects plug-and-play to an existing NMEA 2000 network using the integrated drop cable and supplied T-connector, then is set up with a simple two-step precision calibration on a compatible Garmin chartplotter.
Can it be mounted in any position?
Yes. Its solid-state design allows it to be mounted in any orientation, and it does not need to be installed in the same horizontal plane as the boat. The cable can be routed through the side of the housing or down through the mounting surface.
Does it need a clear view of the sky?
No. The SteadyCast is a heading sensor, not a GPS device, so it does not require a view of the sky. It should, however, be kept away from sources of magnetic interference such as speakers and ferrous objects.
What load does it place on the NMEA 2000 network?
It presents a low load equivalent number of LEN 2, drawing about 100 mA, and accepts a NMEA 2000 input of 9 to 32 Vdc.
Is the SteadyCast waterproof?
Yes. The compact, fully gasketed housing is rated to IEC 60529 IPX7, withstanding incidental immersion in up to 1 m of water for 30 minutes.
