Description
The Actisense OPTO-4 is a serial opto-isolator cable that provides a safe, low-cost way to connect an NMEA 0183 system to a PC. From version 2.0 onwards the NMEA 0183 specification requires isolated, differential listener inputs, but a standard PC RS232 port is neither isolated nor differential. The OPTO-4 bridges that gap, allowing an RS422 or standard RS232 connection to meet the NMEA 0183 listener requirement and protecting equipment from the ground loops common in a marine environment.
The RS232 end is a female 9-pin D-Sub (DB9) connector following the standard RS232 pin-out, and the cable powers itself from the RS232 port's TX and handshaking lines, so in most installations no external supply is needed. An over-moulded case gives excellent water resistance and a small footprint for tight installations.
