Description
The Balmar Smartgauge is an advanced battery fuel gauge that reports State of Charge and voltage without the need to fit a shunt. Instead of counting amp hours, it connects with just three 18 AWG wires directly to the positive terminals of one or two battery banks, then uses proprietary test methods and a self correcting algorithm that compares real world readings against detailed battery models to work out the true state of charge. Because it self calibrates, it becomes more accurate over time and does not suffer the synchronisation error that shunt based counters accumulate when the batteries are not regularly charged to 100 percent.
Independent testing by Enersys found the Smartgauge accurate within 3 percent after six months of use, and it was within 5 percent at all times. It displays voltage for two battery banks and State of Charge for the primary bank on a bright, brightness adjustable LED display, with three membrane switches and colour coded indicator lights that also signal high and low voltage and state of charge alarms. A volt free alarm contact allows external alarms, relays or automatic generator start and stop to be triggered. It automatically adjusts for 12 or 24 volt operation and suits flooded, deep cycle, sealed maintenance free, gel, AGM and lead acid hybrid batteries, but does not monitor lithium ion.

Does the Smartgauge need a shunt?
No. This is the key difference from the SG200. The Smartgauge connects with just three 18 AWG wires to the battery positives and uses a self correcting algorithm to work out state of charge, so there is no heavy cabling or shunt to install.
How accurate is it?
In independent testing by Enersys the Smartgauge was accurate within 3 percent after six months of use, and within 5 percent at all times. Because it self calibrates it actually becomes more accurate the longer it is used.
Can I use it with lithium batteries?
No. The Smartgauge works with flooded, deep cycle, sealed maintenance free, gel, AGM and lead acid hybrid batteries but does not monitor lithium ion. For lithium banks choose the shunt based SG200 instead.
