Description

The Garmin 509LHW (Airmar R509LHW) is the wide-beam member of the high-power 509 thru-hull family. It pairs a 28 to 60 kHz low band with a 150 to 250 kHz high wide band, giving 132 kHz of total bandwidth from a 25-element broadband ceramic array. Where most CHIRP transducers narrow their beam as frequency rises, the wide high band holds a fixed 25 degree beam across the whole range, putting far more coverage beneath the boat. With 2 to 3 kW of dual-range transmit power the low band sounds to 10,000 ft while the wide high band gives broad, detailed returns to 500 ft. The epoxy housing installs as an external thru-hull with a High-Performance Fairing and suits fibreglass, wood or metal hulls up to 25 degrees deadrise on vessels of 12 m and above. An integral depth and fast-response temperature sensor is built in. The transducer terminates in bare wires and requires the Garmin GSD 26 CHIRP sonar module, which connects to networked GPSMAP chartplotters.

Its high band sweeps 150 to 250 kHz and holds a fixed 25 degree beam across the whole range, rather than narrowing as frequency rises. This puts more coverage beneath the boat and reveals more of the water column.
How does the 509LHW differ from the 509LH?
Both are 2-3 kW, 25-element thru-hull CHIRP transducers sharing the 28-60 kHz low band. The 509LHW swaps the standard 130-210 kHz high band for a 150-250 kHz high wide band with a constant 25 degree beam, trading some narrow-beam detail for much wider coverage.
