Description

The Garmin AIS 800 is a Class B SOTDMA Automatic Identification System transceiver that broadcasts your vessel's position to other AIS-equipped craft while receiving their targets, helping you see and be seen for safer navigation. Its 5 W SOTDMA transmitter provides faster, prioritised position reporting compared with older CSTDMA Class B units, and a built-in GPS supplies position data with an optional external antenna connector for installations that need it. A key feature is the internal VHF antenna splitter, which allows the AIS 800 to share a single VHF antenna with your VHF radio, simplifying installation and saving deck space. The transceiver connects to compatible Garmin chartplotters and multifunction displays over NMEA 2000, overlaying AIS targets on the chart. With a wide 12 to 24 Vdc power input, low current draw and a compact IPX7 water-rated housing, the AIS 800 suits a broad range of vessels.

Does the AIS 800 transmit as well as receive?
Yes. The AIS 800 is a Class B SOTDMA transceiver, so it transmits your own vessel position to other AIS-equipped craft and receives their AIS targets.
What is SOTDMA and why does it matter?
SOTDMA (Self-Organised Time Division Multiple Access) is the transmission scheme used by the AIS 800's 5 W transmitter. It provides faster and more consistent position reporting than the older CSTDMA method used by some Class B units.
Do I need a separate VHF antenna?
Not necessarily. The AIS 800 includes an internal VHF antenna splitter, allowing it to share a single VHF antenna with your VHF radio. It also has built-in GPS with an optional external antenna connector.
How does the AIS 800 connect to my chartplotter?
The AIS 800 connects over NMEA 2000, so received AIS targets can be overlaid on compatible Garmin chartplotters and multifunction displays.
What power supply does it need?
The AIS 800 accepts a wide 12 to 24 Vdc input (2 A max) and draws less than 400 mA at 12 Vdc or less than 250 mA at 24 Vdc.
