Description
The Garmin Class A Mechanical Linear Drive Unit is a self-contained linear actuator that steers the rudder of a sailboat under the command of a Garmin GHP or Reactor autopilot. It connects directly to a quadrant or tiller arm and extends and retracts to move the rudder, drawing only a low average current during normal steering.
An integrated electromagnetic clutch engages when the autopilot is active and releases the moment it is disengaged, so the helmsman can take back manual control instantly. The drive must be fitted under deck in a dry location and protected with physical rudder end stops to avoid overtravel.
