Description

The Garmin MSC 10 is a marine satellite compass that combines a multi-band GNSS receiver with a fully integrated attitude and heading reference system. By deriving heading from satellite signals rather than a magnetic sensor, it delivers heading accuracy to within 2 degrees that is not affected by magnetic interference, even in challenging situations. Multi-constellation support across GPS L1 and L5, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou fixes your position to within 1 metre, and a 10 Hz update rate keeps tracking smooth and detailed.

Along with heading, the MSC 10 supplies precise pitch, roll and heave information straight to a compatible Garmin chartplotter over the NMEA 2000 network, making it an ideal primary position and heading source for systems including autopilots. In the rare event that the satellite signal is lost, it transitions seamlessly to a backup magnetometer-based heading. The rugged ASA housing is rated to IPX7, requires no compass-safe distance, and mounts on a surface or a stainless steel pole.

How is a satellite compass different from a magnetic heading sensor?
The MSC 10 derives heading from satellite signals rather than the earth's magnetic field, so its heading (accurate to within 2 degrees) is not degraded by nearby magnetic interference. It also includes an internal magnetometer purely as a backup.
Does the MSC 10 need calibration?
No calibration is required for the GPS-based heading. Garmin recommends calibrating the internal backup magnetic compass so heading is retained if satellite signals are blocked, for example under a bridge or in a covered slip.
What information does it output besides heading?
As well as heading, the MSC 10 outputs position to within 1 metre and precise pitch, roll and heave data, even in rough seas, over the NMEA 2000 network.
Can it drive an autopilot?
Yes. The MSC 10 can serve as the primary position and heading sensor across multiple systems, including autopilots, on a compatible NMEA 2000 network.
How is it mounted?
It mounts on a flat surface or on a stainless steel 1 in. OD pole, and needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky and horizon in all directions with no objects higher than five degrees above the device. A stainless pole is required to avoid unintended rotation.
