Description

The Actisense USG-2 turns a PC USB port into a bi-directional serial port suitable for connecting to a marine standard NMEA 0183 data bus. It provides a far safer connection than an ordinary USB-to-serial converter, using an OPTO-isolated input and an ISO-Drive isolated output to keep the PC and the boat's electronics electrically separate and free from the ground loops that damage connected equipment.

The isolated input uses Actisense OPTO-isolation circuitry to protect connected devices and can receive the very low level signals that a standard PC serial port often cannot. Fully NMEA 0183, RS422 and RS232 compatible, the USG-2 supports baud rates from 300 to 230400 bps, and its encapsulated, potted electronics give a high level of water and ingress protection.

A high quality shielded USB lead is included, mating with a high-retention USB socket for a secure, water-resistant connection, and a pluggable screwless connector with locking latch makes the NMEA side quick to wire. Three LEDs confirm power and data activity, and the unit mounts to a bulkhead with an optional DIN rail kit available.

Why use the USG-2 instead of a standard USB to serial converter?
The USG-2 provides full electrical isolation, with a 2500V OPTO-isolated input and a 1500V ISO-Drive output. This eliminates ground loops and protects both your PC and connected NMEA 0183 equipment, unlike an ordinary non-isolated converter.
What devices can I connect to the USG-2?
The USG-2 is fully NMEA 0183, RS422 and RS232 compatible and supports baud rates from 300 to 230400 bps, so it can interface a wide range of marine talkers and listeners to a PC over USB.
Is the USG-2 suitable for a damp installation?
Yes. The internal electronics are potted and encapsulated to IP67, and the supplied shielded USB lead mates with a high-retention, sealed USB socket, giving a high level of water and ingress protection.
