Does the NAIS-500 transmit as well as receive?
Yes. The NAIS-500 is a full Class B AIS transceiver, so it both transmits your own vessel position, speed and course and receives the AIS signals of other vessels. It is not a receive-only unit. An MMSI number must be programmed before it will transmit; until configured it will only receive.
What is in the box?
The NAIS-500 kit (000-13609-001) includes the AIS transceiver, an external GPS antenna, an NMEA 2000 cable, an NMEA 2000 T-connector, a power and data cable, a USB configuration cable, the configuration software, four fixing screws, and the documentation pack. A VHF antenna is required but not supplied.
How do I connect it to my chartplotter?
The NAIS-500 connects to your chartplotter over NMEA 2000 using the supplied cable, or over NMEA 0183 (set the plotter port to 38,400 baud, sometimes shown as NMEA HS). It networks with compatible B&G, Simrad and Lowrance multifunction displays to overlay AIS targets on the chart.
Can I share my existing VHF antenna instead of fitting a second one?
Yes. Fit a Navico NSPL-500 AIS/VHF antenna splitter (000-13612-001), which lets the NAIS-500 share a single VHF antenna with your VHF voice radio. Only the NSPL-500 should be used, as third party splitters may damage the transceiver.
How high should the antenna be mounted?
For correct RF exposure the VHF antenna should be mounted at least 1.5 m from the transceiver and around 3.5 m above the deck. The external GPS antenna should have a clear view of the sky and should not be mounted up a mast where vessel motion reduces position accuracy.
