Description
The Balmar 97XD-12-240-IG is an extra-large case, high-output marine alternator rated at 240 amps on a 12 volt system. Part of Balmar's heavy-duty 97-Series, it uses the latest braided-stator technology to generate exceptional charging power at low engine speeds, making it ideal for large diesel installations such as Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU and John Deere engines that must service extensive house battery banks. External multi-stage regulation lets you tailor the charge profile to the battery chemistry for safe, efficient replenishment.
Built for extended duty cycles, the 97XD-12-240-IG mounts on a 4 inch dual foot (J-180 style) saddle and ships with a K6 serpentine pulley as standard (K8 available on request). Isolated ground termination provides a dependable, dedicated return path to system ground, and the alternator is rated for operation up to 8,000 rpm. It requires a Balmar external voltage regulator and carries USCG Title 33 ignition protection compliance.

Does the 97XD-12-240-IG need an external regulator?
Yes. The 97XD Series is designed for external multi-stage voltage regulation, so it should be paired with a Balmar regulator such as the MC-618. This lets you match the charge profile to your battery chemistry for safe, efficient charging.
What engines is this alternator suited to?
With its 4 inch dual foot J-180 style mount and extra-large case, it is typically used on larger diesels such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel and John Deere engines that need to charge extensive house battery banks.
What does the IG designation mean?
IG indicates isolated ground. The alternator returns to system ground through a dedicated grounding terminal rather than through the case and engine block, which is preferred in many installations for a clean, reliable ground path.
