Description
The Balmar XT-DF4-170-K6 is a small-case, high-output marine alternator rated at 170 amps on a 12 volt system. It belongs to Balmar's flagship XT-Series, which uses a state-of-the-art braided-wire stator with 96 slots to deliver exceptional charging power from a compact frame while running cooler than the previous AT-Series. The XT-170 produces up to 128 amps at idle, so it keeps large battery banks, including lithium, charging strongly even at low engine speeds.
This version fits a 4 inch dual foot (J-180 style) saddle mount and is supplied with a K6 serpentine pulley and case ground termination. It is commonly used on John Deere, Cummins and Caterpillar engines. The XT-Series includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator for extra fault tolerance and is also compatible with Balmar external multi-stage regulation. Dual internal fans and a high airflow frame provide effective cooling, and the alternator meets USCG Title 33, ISO 8846 and SAE J1171 standards.

What is the difference between the DF and DF4 XT mounts?
Both are dual foot saddle mounts, but the DF uses a 3.15 inch Hitachi-style spacing while the DF4 uses a 4 inch J-180 style spacing. The XT-DF4-170-K6 is the 4 inch J-180 version, common on John Deere, Cummins and Caterpillar engines.
Does it come with an internal regulator?
Yes. The XT-Series includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator for added fault tolerance. It can also be operated with a Balmar external multi-stage regulator such as the MC-618 for full multi-stage charge control.
What belt configuration is required?
The XT-Series should only be run in Dual Vee or multi-groove serpentine belt configurations. This alternator ships with a K6 serpentine pulley; if a suitable pulley is not already present a Balmar AltMount conversion kit may be required.
