Description
The Balmar XT-DF-170-J10 is a small-case, high-output marine alternator rated at 170 amps on a 12 volt system. As part of Balmar's flagship XT-Series, it uses a state-of-the-art braided-wire stator with 96 slots to pack exceptional charging power into a compact frame, producing more output than the previous AT-Series while running cooler. It delivers up to 128 amps at idle speed, which makes it well suited to large battery banks, including lithium, where strong charging at low RPM matters.
This variant fits a 3.15 inch dual foot (Hitachi-style saddle) mount and is supplied with a J10 AltMount serpentine pulley and case ground termination. It is typically used on Yanmar, Westerbeke, Lehman and Perkins-Sabre engines. The XT-Series includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator for added fault tolerance and is also compatible with Balmar external multi-stage regulation. Dual internal fans and a high airflow frame keep it cool, and it carries USCG Title 33, ISO 8846 and SAE J1171 certification.

What is the Smart Ready regulator in the XT-Series?
The XT-Series includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator that provides an extra layer of fault tolerance. The alternator can run on this internal regulation or be paired with a Balmar external multi-stage regulator such as the MC-618 for full multi-stage charge control.
Which engines use the 3.15 inch dual foot J10 version?
The XT-DF-170-J10 uses a 3.15 inch dual foot Hitachi-style saddle mount with a J10 serpentine pulley, which is typical for Yanmar, Westerbeke, Lehman and Perkins-Sabre engines.
Is the XT-170 suitable for lithium battery banks?
Yes. With up to 128A at idle and 170A rated output, the XT-170 is well suited to large banks including lithium. Balmar recommends using it with appropriate multi-stage regulation and, for lithium, a charge program matched to the battery manufacturer's specification.
