Description
The Balmar XT-SF-170-K6-IG is a small-case, high-output marine alternator rated at 170 amps on a 12 volt system, configured with an isolated ground. It is part of Balmar's flagship XT-Series, which uses a state-of-the-art braided-wire stator with 96 slots to produce exceptional charging output from a compact frame while running cooler than the earlier AT-Series. Delivering up to 128 amps at idle, the XT-170 is well suited to large battery banks, including lithium, that need strong charging at low engine speeds.
This variant fits a 1 inch or 2 inch single foot (spindle) mount and is supplied with a K6 serpentine pulley. Its isolated ground termination returns to system ground through a dedicated terminal rather than through the case and engine block, which is preferred in many installations for a clean, reliable ground path. The XT-Series includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator and is also compatible with Balmar external multi-stage regulation, with dual internal fans for cooling and USCG Title 33, ISO 8846 and SAE J1171 certification.

What does the IG suffix mean on this alternator?
IG stands for isolated ground. The XT-SF-170-K6-IG returns to system ground through a dedicated grounding terminal rather than through the case and engine block. It is the isolated ground counterpart to the standard case ground XT-SF-170-K6.
When should I choose an isolated ground alternator?
Isolated ground is preferred where a clean, dedicated ground return is required, for example to reduce galvanic and stray-current issues or when the mounting does not provide a reliable case ground. If those concerns do not apply, the standard case ground version is also suitable.
Does it have an internal regulator?
Yes. Like all XT-Series alternators it includes an internal Smart Ready voltage regulator for added fault tolerance, and it can also be run with a Balmar external multi-stage regulator such as the MC-618.
