Description

The Balmar 96-48-60-K6 is a 60-amp, 48-volt marine alternator that delivers 2.9 kW of charging power, part of the 96-Series that Balmar developed for the growing number of 48-volt battery banks and inverter systems. Moving to 48 volts allows more efficient chargers and inverters, smaller cable sizes and strong alternator output in a reasonable package, and it suits lithium banks that can accept very high charge rates. A low 1,325 RPM turn-on threshold means the alternator starts making power early in the rev range, limiting the need for complex pulley schemes or over-throttling the engine at idle. The 96-48-60-K6 uses a large-case, positive field excitation design with dual internal cooling fans, sealed heavy-duty bearings and a ventilated cast-aluminium case with a clear-anodised finish. It mounts on a 4 inch dual-foot saddle in the J-180 style and drives a K6 serpentine pulley, handling up to 8 horsepower of power take-off. This version uses a case-ground termination. It runs exclusively with the Balmar MC-620 multi-stage regulator, which requires its own 12-volt supply and cannot be powered from the 48-volt source; the alternator will not operate without it. For lithium charging the MC-620 disables output at or below 0 C using the MC-TS-A and MC-TS-B temperature sensors.

Can the 96-48-60-K6 run without the MC-620 regulator?
No. The 96-Series operates exclusively with the Balmar MC-620 external multi-stage regulator and produces no output without it. The MC-620 requires its own 12-volt supply to power the device and cannot be run from the 48-volt source.
Why choose the 60A model over the 100A version?
The 60-amp, 2.9 kW model needs less power take-off (up to 8 HP versus 11 HP) and has an even lower 1,325 RPM turn-on threshold, so it is a good match for smaller engines or 48V banks that do not need the full output of the 100-amp K8 version.
Is it suitable for 48V lithium banks?
Yes. It is designed for high-rate 48V lithium (LiFePO4) charging. In lithium mode the MC-620 disables charging at battery temperatures at or below 0 C (32 F), and both the MC-TS-A alternator and MC-TS-B battery temperature sensors are required.
