Description
The Balmar 96-48-60-K6-IG is a 60-amp, 48-volt marine alternator delivering 2.9 kW of charging power, from the 96-Series that Balmar designed for emerging 48-volt battery banks and inverter systems. A 48-volt architecture supports more efficient chargers and inverters, smaller cable sizes and strong alternator output in a reasonable package, and it is well matched to lithium banks that accept very high charge rates. A low 1,325 RPM turn-on threshold lets the alternator make power early in the rev range, reducing the need for complex pulley schemes or over-throttling at idle.
This version, the K6-IG, adds an isolated-ground terminal so the charging output can be kept electrically separate from the alternator case and engine block. It uses a large-case, positive field excitation design with dual internal cooling fans, sealed heavy-duty bearings and a ventilated cast-aluminium case with a clear-anodised finish, mounting on a 4 inch dual-foot saddle in the J-180 style with a K6 serpentine pulley and handling up to 8 horsepower of power take-off. It runs exclusively with the Balmar MC-620 multi-stage regulator, which requires its own 12-volt supply; the alternator will not operate without it, and for lithium banks the MC-620 disables charging at or below 0 C using the MC-TS-A and MC-TS-B temperature sensors.

What does the IG (isolated ground) version add?
The K6-IG version has an isolated-ground terminal, keeping the negative charging output electrically separate from the alternator case and engine block. This suits installations or class rules that call for an isolated return path. It is otherwise identical to the standard case-ground 96-48-60-K6.
Can it run without the MC-620 regulator?
No. The 96-Series operates exclusively with the Balmar MC-620 external multi-stage regulator and produces no output without it. The MC-620 requires its own 12-volt supply and cannot be powered from the 48-volt system.
Is it suitable for 48V lithium banks?
Yes. It is designed for high-rate 48V lithium (LiFePO4) charging. In lithium mode the MC-620 disables charging at battery temperatures at or below 0 C (32 F), and both the MC-TS-A alternator and MC-TS-B battery temperature sensors are required.
