The EV-2 Sensor Core brings Evolution autopilot intelligence to vessels with drive-by-wire electronic steering. Its 9-axis sensor monitors vessel motion in all three dimensions while the built-in Evolution processor communicates directly with the boat's digital steering system over CAN bus. It is the sensor at the heart of the EV-DBW autopilot packs, controlled from a p70s or p70Rs head or a compatible Axiom chartplotter.

Description

The Raymarine EV-2 Sensor Core (E70097) is the drive-by-wire counterpart to the EV-1. The same 9-axis sensor package, a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis compass and 3-axis gyro, is combined with the Evolution autopilot processor in a sealed IPx6 housing 140 mm in diameter and weighing 0.29 kg. Where the EV-1 commands an Evolution ACU, the EV-2 connects directly to a compatible drive-by-wire steering system over CAN bus, so no separate actuator control unit is required.

Mounting is the same flexible arrangement as the EV-1: deck, wall bracket or mast, above or below decks, with surface and bulkhead mounts included. The sensor draws 30 mA at 12 V dc and is operated from a p70s or p70Rs pilot controller or a networked Axiom chartplotter. The EV-2 is supplied in the EV-DBW autopilot pack (T70164) and the EV-DBW Volvo Edition (T70214), which adds the ECI-100 engine interface for Volvo Penta IPS and Aquamatic systems.

Does an Evolution autopilot need calibration?
No. Set-up is automatic: the rudder gain, rudder damping, counter rudder and compass calibration routines required by earlier autopilots are no longer necessary, and the system keeps refining itself as you use the boat. This is documented in the EV-1 installation instructions (87472).
Do I need a rudder angle reference sensor?
Raymarine highly recommends the rudder angle reference transducer (M81105) on every Evolution system for optimum performance, and it is essential on ACU-300 solenoid installations. The EV-400 Sail and Power packs include a rotary rudder feedback unit, and the ACU-300 ships with one.
Can I control the autopilot from my chartplotter?
Yes. Compatible controllers include the Axiom, Axiom+, Axiom Pro, Axiom 2 Pro, Axiom XL and Axiom 2 XL chartplotter families as well as the p70s and p70Rs pilot heads. Axiom 2 Pro and Axiom 2 XL need LightHouse 4 v4.4.70 or later; earlier families are supported per the compatibility tables in document 87472.
What else does a working Evolution system need?
Per document 87472: a compatible autopilot controller, an ACU power cable, a SeaTalkng backbone, and a speed data source (SOG from GPS as a minimum, ideally a speed sensor). Sailing vessels also need a wind transducer on the network for wind vane steering.
What is the difference between the EV-1 and EV-2 sensor cores?
The EV-1 works with Evolution ACUs to drive conventional steering systems. The EV-2 is for drive-by-wire vessels: it communicates directly with the boat's digital steering system over CAN bus, so no ACU is required.
