The EV-1 Sensor Core is the heart of every Raymarine Evolution autopilot for conventionally steered vessels, combining a 9-axis attitude and heading reference sensor (AHRS) with the Evolution course computer in one compact housing. It holds course to within +/- 2 degrees in all conditions with no separate fluxgate compass and no commissioning calibration. It connects to the SeaTalkng backbone and pairs with an Evolution ACU, a p70s or p70Rs control head, or a compatible Axiom chartplotter.

Description

The Raymarine EV-1 Sensor Core (E70096) packs a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis compass and 3-axis gyro angular rate sensor into a sealed IPx6 puck just 140 mm across and 0.29 kg in weight. Monitoring pitch, roll, yaw and heading simultaneously, it lets an Evolution autopilot hold course to within +/- 2 degrees while it adapts to sea conditions without user calibration: the rudder gain, rudder damping, counter rudder and compass swing routines required by earlier autopilots are no longer necessary.

Installation is flexible. The EV-1 mounts on a flat deck, on the supplied wall bracket, or on a mast or bulkhead, above or below decks, and draws just 30 mA from the SeaTalkng backbone. It works with the ACU-100, ACU-150, ACU-200, ACU-300 and ACU-400 actuator control units and is operated from a p70s or p70Rs pilot controller or a compatible Raymarine Axiom, Axiom 2 Pro or Axiom 2 XL chartplotter. A rudder angle reference transducer (M81105) is recommended for optimum performance.

Does an Evolution autopilot need calibration?
No. Set-up is automatic: the rudder gain, rudder damping, counter rudder and compass calibration routines required by earlier autopilots are no longer necessary, and the system keeps refining itself as you use the boat. This is documented in the EV-1 installation instructions (87472).
Do I need a rudder angle reference sensor?
Raymarine highly recommends the rudder angle reference transducer (M81105) on every Evolution system for optimum performance, and it is essential on ACU-300 solenoid installations. The EV-400 Sail and Power packs include a rotary rudder feedback unit, and the ACU-300 ships with one.
Can I control the autopilot from my chartplotter?
Yes. Compatible controllers include the Axiom, Axiom+, Axiom Pro, Axiom 2 Pro, Axiom XL and Axiom 2 XL chartplotter families as well as the p70s and p70Rs pilot heads. Axiom 2 Pro and Axiom 2 XL need LightHouse 4 v4.4.70 or later; earlier families are supported per the compatibility tables in document 87472.
What else does a working Evolution system need?
Per document 87472: a compatible autopilot controller, an ACU power cable, a SeaTalkng backbone, and a speed data source (SOG from GPS as a minimum, ideally a speed sensor). Sailing vessels also need a wind transducer on the network for wind vane steering.
What is the difference between the EV-1 and EV-2 sensor cores?
The EV-1 works with Evolution ACUs to drive conventional steering systems. The EV-2 is for drive-by-wire vessels: it communicates directly with the boat's digital steering system over CAN bus, so no ACU is required.
